Answer the two questions asked at the end of this post.
You know who your character is and who they are talking to. You know what they want and how they are going to get it. Now let's talk about obstacles.
An obstacle is what is keeping your character from getting what they want. Try to attach your obstacle to the person you are talking to. Think of it less as of physical obstacle and more of an emotional obstacle.
Like let's imagine I want a raise from my boss. I am going to impress her with my previous successes. My obstacle might be that I have actually come to work late a few times this month. So it will be harder to impress and or convince my boss that I am worth a raise.
Or perhaps, I want my significant other to set more time aside for me. I want them to give me proof that they love me. So I am flirting and pleading. My obstacle is that I don't want to seem pathetic or needy; that will be a turn off to them.
So obstacles are personal to the character and situation you have created.
What is at stake if you don't get what you want? If I do not get the raise from my boss, I will not be able to pay my rent at the end of the month and will have to borrow money. Or I will have to move out.
If I do not get my partner to give me the attention I need I may have to face the fact that this is not a good relationship and that I will be alone during a time when I feel very vulnerable.
Think about your character and answer the following two questions in a post.
1. What obstacle is your character facing? Again, keep it focused on the person you are speaking to. 3 sentences
2. What will be the consequence if your character does not get what they want? What is at stake? 3 sentences.
